issuing the cmd.exe command:
dir y:\ > y:\3
...we can see sizes of the off-line files are enclosed in parenthesis:
-bash-3.00# cat /samfs1/3

...so it is a good method to test.
Also the file icon in explorer has the clock-face sub-icon added on the off=line files.
