Description
On a Toshiba Tecra M3 running nv_12, login and run 'xset dpms force off'.
Note that it does not power off the display as expected, but instead displays
bright colorful mezmerizing patterns on the screen.

Fortunately, Mark Vojkovich has just released a fix for this in the open source
"nv" driver as documented at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3095
(it affects a whole class of systems with LCD displays connected to nVidia cards).
