Description
Years ago I used the lucidasanstypewriter font for all my terminal windows.
It was the best looking fixed width font in the system.

At home, on my Linux Fedora system, I use lucidasanstypewriter and it looks
great.

But using the latest versions of Solaris, now Solaris 10 with JDS, the
lucidasanstypewriter font looks like crap. The biggest problem is that
the font metrics are wrong; the font lines are too widely spaced. On
a 1280x1024 screen I should be able to get about 74 lines of text, but
I'm only getting 55. Even ignoring that problem, the font just doesn't
look good. The attachment lucida9.png shows how it looks on my Solaris 10
JDS system. I'll include a screenshot from my Linux machine later.

It turns out that I'm using lucidatypewriter on Linux. Apparently it's
a different font than lucidasanstypewriter, which is not available on
Linux. Still, using lucidatypewriter on Solaris looks like crap.

I've attached two screen dumps - lucida9-linux from my Linux machine
and lucida9-solaris from my Solaris machine. If you look at the details
of the font, it doesn't even look like they're the same font, even though
they clearly have the same name. In any event, the Linux font looks
great and the Solaris font looks terrible.

I've also attached two screen dumps showing fonts in mozilla on Linux
vs. Solaris. They're both using the same fonts. If you zoom in to the
screen dump, you'll see that the fonts on Linux are properly spaced
between characters, but the fonts on Solaris are not evenly spaced.
For example, look at the "v" in "Java".

Again, the Linux fonts look great and the Solaris fonts look terrible.
